Product Description

'Familt Tree' by Carl Brenders

Once, on a field trip in Alaska, I met a veterinarian who cared for sick and injured birds. After they recovered, he released them again. This is how I got the opportunity to pet a young saw-whet owl. Owl lovers say that once you fall in love with saw-whets, it is forever. I believe it, because since then a big desire to paint one never left my mind. When I discovered that the young of the saw-whet look so different than most young owls, painting them became a must.

One would never believe that a young saw-whet one day will look like the adults do. The dark brown head and ochre-beige breast have nothing in common with the final adult plumage. Naturalists used to consider the young saw-whet owls as a separate species.

Some scientists say that the strange name, “saw-whet,” comes from their call, but some think that it comes from the French pioneers who used to say, “Regarde là, une chouette!” (“Look there, an owl!”) The English took this saying over and their accent made it sound like “saw-whet.” I go along with this second theory.
